Sunday Night Hockey - Iginla Trade

Happy Gordie Howe Day (what? it's his birthday...also, Happy Easter)

The Iginla Trade

The Trade

To Pittsburgh: Jarome Iginla
To Calgary: Kenneth Agostino, Ben Hanowski, 1st round pick (2013)

The What-We-All-Thought-Beforehand Trade

To Boston: Jarome Iginla
To Calgary: Alexander Khokhlachev, Matt Bartkowski, Conditional* 1st round pick (2013)

*The condition was that the Bruins would be able to extend Iginla. I've also heard that there was no condition, so there's that.

From Iginla's Corner

The organization came to him and asked for a list. Iginla's list included Boston, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, and Chicago. When Boston and Calgary had a deal, the paperwork hadn't gone through, as Iginla's No Movement Clause wasn't officially waived. By the time it was, he narrowed his list to Pittsburgh and...well that was it. Iginla had control of where he wanted to go, so it is up to the organization to both comply to his wishes and try to get the best deal from said team(s).

"On the bright side, he goes from having no centers to having two" - says everybody

From Feaster's Corner

It's almost impossible to defend Feaster in this case. The best argument I could think of was that he didn't have to make any trade and just keep Iginla (and hope it didn't backfire come Free Agency, were Iginla could sign anywhere). He was handcuffed into only being able to deal with a couple teams. While the Boston deal would have set up Calgary nicely for any kind of rebuild, a technicality kept that trade from happening. In the end he could only deal with Ray Shero and the Penguins.

What Feaster did have was time. There was still a week to the deadline. Instead of trading Iginla right then and there, he had two options:

1) Talk to Iginla and see if he was willing to keep Boston as an option.

or

2) Attempt to bluff Shero and withhold an Iginla trade until the deadline in an attempt to get more from the Penguins.

In both trades, there was (most likely) going to be a late round pick. The Boston deal got the Flames a guy in Khokhlachev who would be a top prospect in their organization. With Pittsburgh, all they got back were a couple of college kids who are more likely to be organizational depth guys.

All Feaster can do now is move on and try to sell off more players in order to build the Flames future. And count down the days until he's fired, that too.

Lineup Notables

While I save this part for Canadian teams, there is none playing today. However, there is one game that caught my eye, therefore I'll do the notables for that game.

The Not Iginla's: Not Iginla (concussion), Not Iginla (knee), and Not Iginla (shoulder) are out. Not Iginla gets the start.

Saturday Night Hockey - March 30 2013

I had a write-up about the Iginla trade, but I can't find the flash drive I had it on. Maybe after CSI Ottawa is done helping Melnyk I'll give them a call. Anyway, here's the usual stuff.

Lineup Notables

Carolina Hurricanes vs. Winnipeg Jets

Carolina: Justin Faulk (sprain MCL), Bobby Sanguinetti (upper body), Cam Ward (sprain MCL), and Dan Ellis (leg) are out. Justin Peters might start.

Sunday Night Hockey - Catch Up Edition

Habs Notes I Wanted To Get To And Finally Will
GOALIE GOAL

I don't think it should have counted, Staal didn't call the bank shot. There would be a great Gomez joke here, but he already scored twice this season.

This was Brodeur's three career goal and the second time a goalie has scored (or got credited for a goal) on the powerplay.

Suspensions

Eric Selleck - Who? Anyway it seemed fair to tact on another game (I didn't realized that legal line change rule until the video).
Joffrey Lupul - 2 games is fair.
Alex Edler - 2 games for THAT? Should have only been 2 minutes.
Not Rick Nash - Embarrassed it wasn't even a hearing, should have been a game (or fine at least).

Trades

To New Jersey: Matt D'Agostini, Conditional 7th round (2015)
To St. Louis: Conditional 4th round (2015)
Trade Analysis: A lot of conditions on this deal. At least D'Agostini will get playing time.

To Pittsburgh: Brenden Morrow, 3rd round (2013)
To Dallas: Joe Morrow, 5th round (2013)
Trade Analysis: The upside is that we can call this the Morrow trade.

And finally...

To Pittsburgh: Zack Boychuk
To Nashville: Zack Boychuk
To Carolina: Zack Boychuk
To AHL: Zack Boychuk

Lineup Notables

Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Winnipeg Jets

Tampa Bay: Vincent Lecavalier (lower body), Ryan Malone (shoulder), Benoit Pouliot (shoulder), Mattias Ohlund (knee), and Anders Lindback (high ankle sprain) are out. Cedric Desjardins is probably in net.

Saturday Night Hockey - Realignment

Realignment

So the NHL and NHLPA finally agree to how to realign the league for (at least) the next two season. The NHLPA passed it with the caveat that it gets re-evaluated after the 2014-15 season. Realignment would make the league look like this:

Western Campbell Conference
Eastern Prince of Wales Conference
Pacific Smythe Division
Midwest Norris Division
Central Adams Division
Atlantic Patrick Division
Anaheim Ducks
Chicago Blackhawks
Boston Bruins
Carolina Hurricanes
Calgary Flames
Colorado Avalanche
Buffalo Sabres
Columbus Blue Jackets
Edmonton Oilers
Dallas Stars
Detroit Red Wings
New Jersey Devils
Los Angeles Kings
Minnesota Wild
Florida Panthers
New York Islanders
Phoenix Coyotes
Nashville Predators
Montreal Canadiens
New York Rangers
San Jose Sharks
St. Louis Blues
Ottawa Senators
Philadelphia Flyers
Vancouver Canucks
Winnipeg Jets
Tampa Bay Lightning
Pittsburgh Penguins

Toronto Maple Leafs
Washington Capitals

(I might have made a few changes).

It does look good for the most part and, overall, should cut down on travel. Every team does the home-and-away trip with the rest of the league, with each team playing intraconference teams three times and intradivision teams four to five times.

What bugs me like last time this was proposed was the stupid idea of having all Northeast teams with Florida and Tampa Bay in the same division. I have a simple solution: move Columbus to the Central, Florida and Tampa Bay move to the Midwest, and Colorado moves to the Pacific to correct for the time zone change. This will also give the East more bias since teams there get the extra
7% (?) chance of making the playoffs.

The playoff format I kind of like. Having the top three in each division and two wildcard spots should correct for any kind of situation were a team from one division gets in despite having less points than a team that didn't qualify. The other (and kind of short-lived) idea of having a one-game playoff for the 4th and 5th team in a division seemed intriguing, but it would also make the regular season almost meaningless for most teams, since that would mean more teams (2/3 of the league - 20 teams - in this case) qualify for the playoffs. Keeping it at 16 with the wildcard spots is the better way to go.

RIP Stompin' Tom
