Saturday Night Hockey - Trade Deadline Recap

The trade deadline went basically the way it always does. No trades early on (in this case not until after noon EST), a couple small moves, then a rush of trades until the end, and a big name is moved.

Note: Only including trades on deadline day. So no Jagr (stupid Bruins) and Clowe (nice early return) trades included.

To San Jose: Scott Hannan
To Nashville: Conditional 7th round pick (2013)
Trade Analysis: Can we please stop with the stupid conditions on picks this low? First round I understand for lottery purposes. A condition on a 7th rounder? You've lost me.

To Edmonton: Jerred Smithson
To Florida: 4th round pick (2013)
Trade Analysis: Oh look, another depth move by Edmonton.

To Pittsburgh: Jussi Jokinen
To Carolina: Conditional 7th round pick
Trade Analysis: Have you seen the conditions on this pick? Jesus Christ Shero, just pick the guy off waivers next time and take the extra bit of cap hit.

To Tampa Bay: Ben Bishop
To Ottawa: Cory Conacher, 4th round pick (2013)
Trade Analysis: Yzerman is again going for (tall) goalies on the cheap. Bishop is having a good year - and a great debut for Tampa Bay - but it's not certain if this is just a good year or is the start of Bishop becoming a solid goalie (he hasn't played 40 games in his career). Conacher on the other hand has been hot and cold since starting the season on fire, so the book is still being written on him.

To Philadelphia: Steve Mason
To Columbus: Michael Leighton, 3rd round pick (2013)
Trade Analysis: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Oh Philly.

Trade Analysis: Jarmo Kekelainen, Finnish Assassin. In other news, Rick Nash just experienced deja vu.

To Minnesota: Jason Pominville, 4th round pick (2014)
To Buffalo: Johan Larsson, Matt Hackett, 1st round pick (2013), 2nd round pick (2014)
Trade Analysis: Good trade by Buffalo. Not saying that they are going to rebuild now, but a nice trade to stock up on prospects.

To Columbus: Blake Comeau
To Calgary: 5th round pick (2013)
Trade Analysis: After that sell-off to New York, Columbus did need to regain some depth.

To San Jose: Raffi Torres
To Phoenix: 3rd round pick (2013)
Trade Analysis: The head-hunter (team) just became the head-hunted (team). My money is on Torres taking out Yandle.

To Toronto: Ryan O'Byrne
To Colorado: 4th round pick (2014)
Trade Analysis: O'man, the laughing at the Leafs I did after this trade.

To Boston: Wade Redden
To St. Louis: Conditional 7th round pick (2014)
Trade Analysis: Redden and Chara are back. In an unrelated note, a drunken Sens fan just started muttering something about "the good old days".

To New Jersey: Steve Sullivan
To Phoenix: 7th round pick (2014)
Trade Analysis: On the bright side, the Devils now covered a quarter of Kovalchuk's missed ice time.

To Minnesota: Jeff Deslauriers
To Anaheim: Future Considerations
Trade Analysis: Ah, love seeing a "future consideration" trade instead of dumb conditional late-round picks.

To Washington: Martin Erat, Michael Latta
To Nashville: Filip Forsberg
Trade Analysis: So a couple hours after the deadline they finally announced this deal? The Sporting New's Jesse Spector looked at prospects being traded within a few years after being drafted. What caught my eye was that most of who he concluded that lived up to potential (so far) were actually traded within a year of being drafted. There is some evidence in the team knowing when prospects might be a bust, but it looks like it takes a couple years to have a good enough sample size in judging a prospect. I think Forsberg is a good pickup for Nashville later on, but right now this move was basically so Washington could go for the playoffs.

To Pittsburgh: Future Considerations

Philadelphia Flyers vs. Winnipeg Jets

Philadelphia: Half the roster is injured, that's all you need to know. Ilya Bryzgalov starts this afternoon.
Winnipeg: Jim Slater (upper body), Anthony Peluso (hand), James Wright (upper body), Nik Antropov (lower body), and Zach Redmond (leg) are out. Ondrej Pavelec is scheduled to start.

Edmonton Oilers vs. Los Angeles Kings

Edmonton: Eric Belanger (groin) and Andy Sutton (knee) are out. Devan Dubnyk might start.
Los Angeles: Dustin Penner (pancake related lower body), Matt Greene (back), and Willie Mitchell (knee) are out. Jonathan Quick will be in net.

Boston Bruins vs. Montreal Canadiens

Boston: Marc Savard (concussion), Patrice Bergeron (concussion), Chris Kelly (leg), and Adam McQuaid (shoulder) are out. Tuukka Rask is in net.
Montreal: Rene Bourque (concussion), Colby Armstrong (knee), and Raphael Diaz (concussion) are out while Tomas Plekanec (groin) is probable. Carey Price starts.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs. New Jersey Devils

Toronto:  Joffrey Lupul (upper body) is out while Clarke MacArthur (upper body) and Leo Komarov (upper body) are questionable. James Reimer is expected to start.
New Jersey: Ilya Kovalchuk (shoulder) is out while Tom Kostopoulos (head) is questionable. Martin Brodeur starts.

Calgary Flames vs. Vancouver Canucks

Calgary: Paul Byron (hand) is out. Miikka Kiprusoff starts tonight.
Vancouver: Ryan Kesler (foot), Manny Malhotra (eye), David Booth (ankle), Zach Kassian (back), Dale Weise (shoulder) and Keith Ballard (foot) are out. Cory "My Contract Doesn't Suck" Schneider will start.
