Division Re-alignments (Version 2.42)

I dunno what's worst: that is is kind of inspired by a recent Ask Adam, or that I was reading something he wrote. Anyway, here are a few more ideas about how the division may be re-aligned:

Option #6

Eastern Conference - Boston, Buffalo, Carolina, Detroit, Florida, Montreal, New Jersey, New York I, New York R, Ottawa, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, Toronto, Washington
Western Conference - Anaheim, Calgary, Chicago, Colorado, Columbus, Dallas, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Minnesota, Nashville, Phoenix, San Jose, St. Louis, Vancouver, Winnipeg

Staight forward: demolish the divisions and go by conference.

Option #7

Adams - Boston, Buffalo, Columbus, Montreal, New Jersey, New York I, New York R, Ottawa
Patrick - Carolina, Florida, Nashville, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, Washington
Norris - Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Minnesota, St. Louis, Toronto, Winnipeg
Smythe - Anaheim, Calgary, Colorado, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose, Vancouver

Ah nostalgia, but with a twist! The New York Metropolitian teams move to the Adams, Tampa moves to the Patrick, and Winnipeg moves to the Norris. This way, the expansion/relocated teams fit in and there's not too much in the way of geographical conflict.

Option #8

Northeast - Boston, Detroit, Montreal, Ottawa, Quebec, Toronto
Atlantic - Buffalo, New Jersey, New York I, New York R, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh
Southeast - Atlanta, Carolina, Florida, Hartford, Tampa Bay, Washington
Northwest - Calgary, Edmonton, Minnesota, Seattle, Vancouver, Winnipeg
Central - Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Kansas City, Nashville, St. Louis
Pacific - Anaheim, Colorado, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose

If you ever wanted to see wishful thinking displayed, look no further. 6 "new" teams (Hartford, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Quebec, Seattle, and Winnipeg) to expand the league to 36.

Obviously these options are never gonna happen, but it's kind of fun to think about them.

NHL Playoffs 2011 - Stanley Cup Finals Predictions

Stanley Cup Finals

(1) Vancouver Canucks vs. (3) Boston Bruins

BEK: Vancouver Canucks

For a moment, I was going to pick Boston. Seriously, I'm at the point of using reverse psychology to spite them. The problem is that if I picked them I'll have to hand in my Habs fandom (especially if they win I'll look like a genius/traitor). Vancouver in 5.

2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs Review - Round 3: (3) Boston Bruins vs. (5) Tampa Bay Lightning

Series Summary

Outside of game 5, it was either a pond hockey game, or a goaltending duel. Credit to Boston for pulling out the series win (mutters obscenities under beath). Both teams split the first few home games, making it a best of 3 series. Mike Smith stunningly was in place for game 5, but failed to jump start the Lightning as they lost. Roli came back in game 6 and won, setting up game 7. Game 7 was a goaltending duel, with Nathan "Want Some Water?" Horton tipping in a pass from Krejci. Boston will now face Vancouver in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Three Thoughts About The Series

1. Steve Downie and Andrew Ference: not as romantic a couple as you think.
2. I've always liked Brett Clark (even though he hasn't been playing well in the playoffs), but did Boston really have to give him a Bobby Orr moment?
3. Newest recipient of the "Hey Greg, can you tell your dad to let this little incident go?" perk: Nathan Horton.

2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs Review - Round 3: (1) Vancouver Canucks vs. (2) San Jose Sharks

Series Summary

Outside of game 2 (more on that in a sec), it was a  pretty close series. The main difference was the Vancouver showed up in key moments while San Jose wasn't able to. Here's a quick game 5 recap: Niemi did his best Luongo impression (giving up a late, game-tying goal), and Bieksa's goal was the most anti-climatic goal you can score (or atleast from what I've seen). About game 2: Ben Eager went from being a boob to seeing them. Seriously, replace the Green Men with her!

Division Re-alignments (Version 1.65)

With Atlanta moving to Winnipeg (or maybe not), the NHL will probably be forced to move teams into different divisions (and maybe conference). Here are 5 possible re-alignments:

Option #1

Northeast - Boston, Buffalo, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto
Atlantic - New Jersey, New York I, New York R, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh
Southeast - Carolina, Florida, Tampa Bay, Washington, Winnipeg
Northwest - Calgary, Colorado, Edmonton, Minnesota, Vancouver
Central - Chicago, Columbus, Detroit, Nashville, St. Louis
Pacific - Anaheim, Dallas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose

Straight forward: Winnipeg stays in the Southeast (until after next season).

Option #2

Northeast - Buffalo, Detroit, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto
Atlantic - Boston, New York I, New York R, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh
Southeast - Carolina, Florida, New Jersey, Tampa Bay, Washington
Northwest - Calgary, Colorado, Edmonton, Vancouver, Winnipeg
Central - Chicago, Columbus, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis
Pacific - Anaheim, Dallas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose

This one may be confusing, so bear with me. Winnipeg joins the Northwest divison with all the other Western Canadian teams, Minnesota gets bumped to the Central, Detroit gets it's wish and moves to the Eastern Conference. Since the Northeast would be crowded, Boston (being the south-most team) gets bumped down to the Atlantic. New Jersey moves to the Southeast because of circumstance (only team not in New York or Pennsylvania). We all know that won't happen since you would have to pry the team bus out of Lou Lammerello's cold, dead hands. Its a start though.

Option #3

Northeast - Boston, Buffalo, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto
Atlantic - New Jersey, New York I, New York R, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh
Southeast - Carolina, Florida, Nashville, Tampa Bay, Washington
Northwest - Calgary, Colorado, Edmonton, Minnesota, Winnipeg
Central - Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, St. Louis
Pacific - Anaheim, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose, Vancouver

Again, Winnipeg joins the Northwest. This time, Vancouver gets bumped to the Pacific (good: time zone, bad: not with other Canadian teams). Dallas moves to the Central division, and Nashville fills the void in the Southeast. Columbus could also be considered for the Southeast.

Option #4

Northeast - Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto
Atlantic - New Jersey, New York I, New York R, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh
Southeast - Carolina, Florida, Tampa Bay, Washington
Northwest - Calgary, Colorado, Edmonton, Minnesota, Vancouver, Winnipeg
Central - Chicago, Columbus, Nashville, St. Louis
Pacific - Anaheim, Dallas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose

Simple enough, just overload the Northern divisions.

Option #5

Northeast - Boston, Detroit, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto
Atlantic - Buffalo, New Jersey, New York R, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh
Southeast - Carolina, Florida, New York I, Tampa Bay, Washington
Northwest - Calgary, Edmonton, Minnesota, Vancouver, Winnipeg
Central - Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Nashville, St. Louis
Pacific - Anaheim, Colorado, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose

Another jumbled option. Winnipeg joins the Northwest. Colorado moves to the Pacific (mountains and oceans, oh my). Dallas joins the Central, Detroit moves to the Northeast. Because of rivalry reasons, Buffalo is moved to the Atlantic. The New York Islanders move to the Southeast. Why? Competition reasons (it's an easier division to play in).

There are tons more options, but this is just a basic (ok, maybe just to me) run-down of what the NHL may look like next season. Getting Detroit to the East does seem like a main priority if Winnipeg gets the team, but the subsequent movement of Eastern teams is difficult due to geographical reasons.

World Championship Update - Medal Games and Final Standings

Earlier today was the conclusion of the World Championship in Slovakia, so lets recap the two medal games.

Bronze Medal Game

Czech Republic 7 - Russia 4

Well, that was a shootout wasn't it? It's almost like they played with empty nets. This is probably true for Russia as Konstantin Balurin (Atlant Mytishi - KHL) only saved 21 out of 27 shots (the Czech's 7th goal was an empty netter). On the other end, Ondrej Pavalec (Winnipeg Atlanta Thrashers) was able to stop 39 out of 43 shots. Russia did lead after the first 3-2, but the Czech's stormed back in the second. Lead by Roman Cervenka's (Avangard Omsk - KHL) two goals (making it a hat-trick for him), the Czech had a 5-4 lead going into the third. Jan Marek (Atlant Mytishi - KHL) scored to make it 6-4 Czech's. Tomas Pleckanec (Montreal Canadiens) iced the game with an empty net goal 35 seconds after Russia pulled Balurin. The Czechs end up with the Bronze Medal while Russia settles from 4th.

Gold Medal Game

Sweden 1 - Finland 6

Here is what happened in the first two periods: 0-0 after one, Magnus Paajarvi (Edmonton Oilers) for Sweden and Jarkko Immonen (Ak Bars Kazan - KHL) of Finland made the game 1-1 after two. In the third period, Finald just EXPLODED. Two goals in the first 3:21 and three more in the last 3:19 of the period. Viktor Fasth (AIK Stockholm - SEL) only saved 26 out of 31 shots against. His counterpart, Petri Vehanen (Ak Bars Kazan), saved 32 out of 33. This is Finland's first gold medal since 1995.

Final Standings

1 (Gold) - Finland
2 (Silver) - Sweden
3 (Bronze) - Czech Republic
4 - Russia
5 - Canada
6 - Norway
7 - Germany
8 - USA
9 - Switzerland

World Championship Update - Quarter- and Semi-Finals

Hey, guess who's back (this feels like overkill).

Quarter Finals

(1) Czech Republic 4 - (4) USA 0

All you need to know in one line: Jagr scores hat-trick

(2) Sweden 5 - (3) Germany 2

All you need to know in one line: Germany should be happy finishing that high.

(2) Finland 4 - (3) Norway 1

All you need to know in one line: All the scoring happened in the 2nd period, but the main point is: What is Norway doing THAT high up in the standings?!?!

(1) Canada 1 - (4) Russia 2

All you need to know in one line three points:
  • Canada had a 1-0 lead until the third
  • If Russia won 2-1 with half there Olympic Roster compared to Canada's (maybe) 2 players, I'd hate to see what would happen in Sochi 2014.
  • Kovalchuk scores winner (deja vu)
Semi-Finals

(1) Czech Republic 2 - (2) Sweden 5

All you need to know in one line: Sweden 5 - Elias 2

(2) Finland 3 - (4) Russia 0

All you need to know in one line: Finland shuts out Russia, goes for Silver.

World Championship Update - Qualifying and Relegation Rounds

Fourth post of the day, and it's not even 2pm yet (Atlantic Time FYI)! I lost a lot of time updating this tournament since the site needed maintenance. So here is the results of the Qualifying and Relegation Rounds. I'll attempt to have the Quater- and Semi-Finals done for later (the medal games are tomorrow). Just a quick note on Groups E and F, 2 of the Round Robin groups are combined to make one of these groups with the results carrying over.

Group E

1 (Playoff Round) - Czech Republic    5W - 0L - 15PTS - +12GD
2 (Playoff Round) - Finland                 2W - 2OTW - 1L - 10PTS - +6GD
3 (Playoff Round) - Germany              2W - 2OTL - 1L - 8PTS - -2GD
4 (Playoff Round) - Russia                  2W - 1OTL - 2L - 7PTS - -2GD
5 - Slovakia                                        1W - 4L - 3PTS - -1GD
6 - Denmark                                       0W - 1OTW - 4L - 2PTS - -13GD

The Czechs run the table, beating Slovakia and Russia 3-2, and Germany 5-2. Finland needed shootouts to beat Germany (5-4) and Russia (3-2), they also won against Slovakia 2-1. Germany's lone win (3-2 in a shootout against Denmark) was enough for them to finish third. Russia also beat Denmark (4-3) to finish fourth. Slovakia finished 5th by...you guessed it...beating Denmark (4-1).
Group F

1 (Playoff Round) - Canada            3W - 2OTW - 0L - 13PTS - +12GD
2 (Playoff Round) - Sweden           3W - 1OTL - 1L - 10PTS - +8GD
3 (Playoff Round) - Norway           2W - 1OTW - 2L - 8PTS - +2GD
4 (Playoff Round) - USA                2W - 1OTL - 2L - 7PTS - -4GD
5 - Switzerland                               1W - 1OTW - 1OTL - 2L - 6PTS - -1GD
6 - France                                      0W - 1OTL - 4L - 1PTS - -17GD

Canada goes undefeated, but this round wasn't as kind to them. They needed a shootout to beat the US (4-3), just beat Norway 3-2, and needed a 3rd period goal to beat Sweden 3-2. Sweden was the opposite, shouting out France (4-0) and Switzerland (2-0) before losing to Canada. Norway held off the Swiss (3-2) and easily beat France 5-2. The US's win against France (3-2) and Switzerland (5-3) helped them secure a spot for the Playoff Round. Because of Switzerland's win against France in the Round Robin, they finish 5th.

Relegation Round

1 - Latvia                              2W - 1L - 3PTS - +3GD
2 - Belarus                            2W - 1L - 3PTS - +8GD
3 (Relegated) - Austria          1W - 2L - 3PTS - -7GD
4 (Relegated) - Slovenia        1W - 2L - 3PTS - -4GD

Well this one was a no-brainer, but how it started was (to put it in Jon Stewart term's) a clusterf***. After two games each, all teams had a win and a lost. Belarus absolutely clobbered Slovenia 7-1 to stay alive and send Slovenia down to Division I. Latvia's win against Austria wasn't as bad (4-1). So Belarus and Latvia stay up for another year while Austria and Slovenia are sent packing to Division I.

That's all the groups recapped. Like I mentioned I'll try to do something for the Quarter- and Semi-Finals later.

2011 Stanley Cup Playoff Review - Round 2: (2) San Jose Sharks vs. (3) Detroit Red Wings

Series Summary

If anyone wanted to know what the meaning of a "close series" was, this is it. 6 of the 7 games (well, all 7 sans an empty netter) ended with the winning team up by one. the Sharks almost completed a sweep of the Red Wings (an impressive feat), then the Red Wings stormed back form 3-0 to tie the series 3-3 (just as impressive). The Sharks gut it out (get it?) and managed to avoid the big "CHOKER" stamp with a Game 7 win. While the ink may be dried up on the stamp, if San Jose doesn't get past Vancouver in the next round, it would be time to re-dab it and slam it on the Sharks.

Three Thoughts About The Series

1. So, how many Red Wings fans would have jumped off the bridge to Windsor if it was a sweep?
2. According to Elias Sports Bureau, this series is considered the closes NHL playoff series ever.
3. Hey Roenick, is scoring a game-winner "gutless"?

2011 Stanley Cup Playoff Review - Round 2: (1) Vancouver Canucks vs. (5) Nashville Predators

Series Summary

It's nice to now that after Game 2 that it seemed like the Canucks were bound to choke (says hysteria). It was a close series, with good goaltending, Ryan Kesler finally scoring (which appearently makes him a Conn Smythe candidate now), and Joel Ward with some Game 5 heroics. Every game was close (for the most part), with 5 of them decided by one goal. The downside (for Vancouver) is that the Sedin's still didn't do too much. Overall it was a good series, with the Canucks moving on to the Conference Finals.

Three Thoughts About The Series

1. Quote of the Playoffs #2: (Barry Trotz in Stanley Park, asked by a couple of hockey fans if he's the Preds head coach) “That’s someone else, I think that guy’s ugly.”
2. You can tell that the second round was boring when the NHL gets after the Green Men for being entertaining.
3. I wonder if ANYONE in Nashville refers to Carry Underwood as "Mike Fisher's wife" instead of the other way around. And speaking of which...

Picture of the Series

I'm sure no one is gonna complain about a pic of Carry Underwood.

Play of the Series

Kesler's deking between 2 Preds and scoring? Nope. Rinne's overtime save? Keep guessing. David Legwand's behind the net goal? Still no. Give up? It's:

The cameraman now knows the meaning of "Smashville"!

The Conference Finals Are Here! The Conference Finals Are Here!

(Ed. Note: Because of maintenance to the site, I'm currently back-logged in work, so expect me to put out numberous post this weekend. You've been warned.)

Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Boston Bruins

Yes, it's the 1-3-1 vs. the Big Bad Bruins, it's ancient goaltender vs. the late-bloomer, it's ancient goalie vs. ancient player, it's....ok, I've got a million of these but I'll stop wasting time. am I still holding a grudge against Boston? You betcha, but for the sake of this prediction I'll try to remain unbias. For Boston, as long as it isn't special teams (ok, they've fixed it somewhat) they should do fine. For Tampa, the 1-3-1 (or "Trap Lite" - half as exciting as the regular trap, same great result*) might be key in preventing Boston in dominating 5-on-5. In the end, I can see Tampa squeezing out a series win because of their depth. Tampa Bay in 6.

*I've really been wanting to use that "Trap Lite" thing for a while.

San Jose Sharks vs. Vancouver Canucks

In the West, it's a pair of chokers (term can be loosely used for the Canucks). The Canucks already beat their demon (Blackhawks) while the Sharks are still trying to reach the Finals. The 2 big questions for the Cancks are can the Sedins finally start producing? and will Luongo avoid his (enevitable) choke. The Sharks would need Marleau to show more guts and hope Niemi can be a little more consistent. In the end, I think Vancouver has a slight edge over San Jose. Vancouver in 7.

World Championship Update - Preliminary Edition

Well, blink away for one second and this tournament is half-way through the Qualifying Round. So lets take a look at the results of the Preliminary Round.

Preliminary Round:

Group A

Results:
1 (Qualifying Round) - Germany     2W - 1OTW - 0L - 8PTS - +4GD
2 (Qualifying Round) - Russia         2W - 1L - 6PTS - +1GD
3 (Qualifying Round) - Slovakia      1W - 2L - 3PTS - 0GD
4 (Relegation Round) - Slovenia     0W - 1OTL - 2L - 1PTS - -5GD

Well...uh...Russia maybe missed having half of the Capitals roster on the team. Ah screw it, I'm too excited to downplay Russia's 2-0 lost to Germany, which was the FIRST game of the tournament. Seriously, too many ways to go on this: Kovalchuk's season-long curse continues, Nabakov's first meaningful game since December (could have said last year, but I'll give the KHL a break). After Russia though, Germany seemed to have struggled against the weaker opponents, allowing Slovakia to almost comeback from 3-0 and going to a shootout with Slovenia. Russia surprisingly struggled, winning only 6-4 and 4-3 against Slovenia and Slovakia respectively. Slovakia beat Slovenia 3-1 to keep a Qualifying Round spot. Slovenia now has to survive the Relegation Round.

Group B
Results:
1 (Qualifying Round) - Canada           2W - 1OTW - 0L - 9PTS - +12GD
2 (Qualifying Round) - Switzerland     1W - 1OTW - 1OTL - 0L - 6PTS - +3GD
3 (Qualifying Round) - France            0W - 1OTW - 1OTL - 1L - 3PTS - -8GD
4 (Relegation Round) - Belarus          0W - 1OTL - 2L - 1PTS - -7GD

Canada didn't have much trouble, winning 4-1 against Belarus and 9-1 against France. Their only challenge ended in a 4-3 overtime win against Switzerland. The Swiss surprisingly stumbled against France in their opening game, winning 1-0 in OT. They rebounded with a 4-1 win over Belarus. Speaking of Belarus, they just beat out France 4-3 in overtime* to qualify for the next round. France gets to fight from survival.

*A lot of overtime games eh?

Group C

Results:
1 (Qualifying Round) - Sweden      2W - 1OTL - 0L - 7PTS - +6GD
2 (Qualifying Round) - USA          2W - 1L - 6PTS - +2GD
3 (Qualifying Round) - Norway     1W - 1OTW - 1L - 5PTS - +4GD
4 (Relegation Round) - Austria      0L - 3L - 0PTS - -12GD

Sweden was stunned early in the tournament, losing to Norway 5-4 in a shootout. The Swedes rebounded with a 3-0 win over Austria and finished with a 6-2 win over the US. The Americans easily won against Austria 5-1 before needing a 3rd period comabck to beat Norway 4-2. Norway's only regulation win was a 5-0 drubbing of Austria. Austria is now in familiar territory (the Relegation Round).

Group D

Results:
1 (Qualifying Round) - Czech Republic     3W - 0L - 9PTS - +9GD
2 (Qualifying Round) - Finland                  1W - 1OTW - 1L - 5PTS - +4GD
3 (Qualifying Round) - Denmark               1W - 1OTW - 1L - 4PTS - -9GD
4 (Relegation Round) - Latvia                   0W - 2OTL - 1L - 2PTS - -4GD

The Czechs breezed by with a 4-2 win over Latvia, 6-0 win over Denmark, and 2-1 win over Finland. The Finns won 5-1 over Denmark and needed  a shootout to beat Latvia 3-2. Denmark also needed a shootout to beat Latvia 3-2, and secured a spot in the next round. Latvia is (unfortunately) demoted to the Relegation Round.

Thats it for now. The Qualifying and Relegation rounds end Monday, review should be Tuesday.

2011 Stanley Cup Playoff Review - Round 2: (1) Washington Capitals vs. (5) Tampa Bay Lightning

Series Summary

Wow, that was some series eh? Seriously, who saw a sweep coming? Out-working, out-scoring, out-goaltending, and out-normal-line-changing by Tampa Bay led to an easy series win over Washington. A lot of credit also goes to Lightning coach Guy Boucher's 1-3-1 defense system (maybe more on that during the weekend...maybe). The fact that the Caps only had a lead 3 times in the series (once in game 1, twice in game 3) and needs to better co-ordinate line changes is troublesome. Tampa Bay now moves on to the third round.

Three Thoughts About The Series

1. Seriously, I know the Caps are labelled chokers, but who saw a sweep?
2. Quote of the Playoffs #1: (Lightning Head Coach Guy Boucher on the injury status of Simon Gagne and Pavel Kubina) “day-to-day, except for today and tomorrow.”
3. Roloson keeps his "no more than 3 GA/Game" streak going.
