2014 IIHF World Championship Recap - Gold Russ(ian)

Russia was able to make up for a bad Olympics, North Europe didn't leave empty-handed, and North America failed to make it out of the first round.

Note: Most information from the IIHF website.

Quarter Finals

Russia 3
France 0

This game was Russia's for the taking. Artyom Anisimov scored four minutes into the game. Evgeni Malkin would extend Russia's early in the second period on the powerplay. Alexander Kutuzov would add another goal to Russia's lead in the third. Russian goalie Sergei Bobrovsky had little trouble earning the shutout, as he stopped all 16 shots France could muster.

Sweden 3
Belarus 2

Sweden would silence the home crowd in the first, as Niclas Danielsson scored on the powerplay to put the Swedes up 1-0. Things turned around for Belarus in the second, as Geoff Platt would tie the game before Alexei Yefimenko put Belarus in the lead. Jimmie Ericsson would score on the powerplay late in the period to tie the game. Mattias Ekholm would go from goat to hero in the third. First, Ekholm would get called for hooking Alexei Kalyuzhny, which gave Kalyuzhny a penalty shot (he failed to convert). Less than a minute later, Ekholm would beat Kevin Lalande, giving Sweden the lead. The Swedes would hold on from there, as they win the game and advance to the semi-finals.

USA 3
Czech Republic 4

The US and Czech Republic faced off in a rematch of a Sochi Olympic playoff game. The Americans would strike first, as Brock Nelson gave them a 1-0 lead on a powerplay goal. The lead didn't least long, as Tomas Rolinek would score minutes later to tie the game. Things turned ugly in the second, as Justin Abdelkader would get a charging major and a game misconduct after hitting Vladimir Sobotka. The Czechs powerplay would go to work, as Tomas Hertl and Roman Cervenka would score on the 5-minute man-advantage. Ondrej Nemec would add a powerplay goal of his own later in the period. The US would pressure in the third, accumulating with Tyler Johnson scoring twice in the last 2 minutes. In the end, the US could not find the tying goal. The Czech Republic would avenge their Olympic loss and move on to the semi-finals.

Canada 2
Finland 3

Finland would open the scoring in the game, as Olli Palola's powerplay goal gave them a 1-0 lead. Canada didn't get on the scoreboard until Kyle Turris scored in the second. Mark Scheifele would break the tie minutes later, as Canada would take the lead. It didn't take long in the third for Finland to tie the game back up, as Juuso Hietanen would blast a shot past Ben Scrivens. A bad turnover by Canada late in the game would cost them, as Iiro Pakarinen found the back of the net to give Finland the lead. The Finns would hang on for the last couple minutes to win the game an move on to the semi-finals.

Semi-Finals

Russia 3
Sweden 1

Things looked good for Sweden early on, as Oscar Moller scored 18 seconds into the game to give them an early lead. Russia answered back later in the period, as the Sergei's (Plotnikov and Shirokov) would help Russia end the period up 2-1. Anton Belov would score midway through the second to extend Russia's lead. That was all for scoring, as Russia would coast to the 3-1 win. Russia's win gives them a chance to go for gold while Sweden ends up playing for bronze.

Czech Republic 0
Finland 3

Finland would pressure in the first, but only Jori Lehtera would find the back of the net. While the game evened out in the second, it was still Finland scoring the goals. Jarkko Immonen would score on the powerplay to extend the lead to 2-0. Lehtera would add an empty net goal in the third ice the game for good. Pekke Rinne would stop all 20 Czech shots in the shutout. Finland's win puts them in the gold medal game while the Czechs play for bronze.

Bronze Medal Game

Sweden 3
Czech Republic 0

Sweden took the lead in the first 5 minutes thanks to Joachim Lindstrom. Simon Hjalmarsson's gola late in the first would extend Sweden's lead. While no goals happened in the second, penalties did. Sweden would rack up 10 minutes in the box while the Czechs had 6 of their own. Sweden would go back on the scoreboard in the third, as Mikael Backlund scored Sweden's third goal. The Czech's couldn't beat Andres Nilsson, as he stopped all 29 shots in the shutout effort. Sweden's 3-0 win gives them the bronze medal.

Gold Medal Game

Russia 5
Finland 2

After some early penalties by both teams, Sergei Shirokov would open the scoring midway through the first (on the powerplay no less). The period would end tied though, as Iiro Pakarinen scored with 3 seconds remaining. Finland would take the lead in the second thanks to Olli Palola. It didn't take long for Russia to respond, as Alexander Ovechkin scored less than minute later to tie the game. Evgeni Malkin would give Russia the lead on a 2-man advantage later in the period. Russia's powerplay would put the game out of reach in the third. Danis Zaripov and Viktor Tikhonov both scored on the man-advantage as Russia would win the game 5-2. Russia would make up for their poor performance at Sochi, winning the World Championship.

2014 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs Review: (P1) Anaheim Ducks vs. (P3) Los Angeles Kings

Series Summary

Talk about having home ice advantage throughout a series, these teams didn't need to travel far to face each other.  Alec Martinez would start the scoring in Game 1 with a powerplay goal. Matt Beleskey would score 2 minutes later to tie the game at 1-all. It would take a while for the next goal, as Teemu Selanne finally broke the deadlock midway through the third. Marian Gaborik would play hero for the Kings in the end. First, Gaborik would tie the game up with 7 seconds left in regulation. Then 12 minutes into overtime, Gaborik would redirect a pass past Jonas Hiller to give the Kings the win. Gaborik would continue his scoring streak in Game 2, finding the back of the net only 34 seconds into the game. Anaheim managed to tie the game up midway though the period, but that didn't last long. A Martinez blast from the point gave the Kings the lead. Jonathan Quick would take over from there, stopping everything in sight. Dwight King would ice the game with in empty net goal, as the Kings take Game 2 and extend their series lead. Game 3 saw Anaheim get the first go of the game, as a Corey Perry powerplay goal gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead. The teams would swap powerplay goals in the second. Ben Lovejoy's goal in the third was enough for the Ducks, as they would go on to win 3-1 and take their first game of the series. In a questionable move, rookie John Gibson would start for the Ducks in Game 4. The move ended up paying off, as Gibson would stop all 28 shots the Kings registered. At the other end, first period goals by Devente Smith-Pelly and Ryan Getzlaf highlight what ended up being a dreadful day offensively for the Ducks. Minus the first period, the Ducks would only register 3 shots in the last 2 periods (all in the third, they did not get a shot in the second). Nevertheless, Anaheim would escape Game 4 with the win to tie the series. Goals would return in Game 5, with Nick Bonino kicking it off early in the first. Trevor Lewis would tie the game up midway through the frame. The start of the second saw Anaheim get 2 unanswered - they would add one more a bit later. Gaborik would score late in the second to decrease Anaheim's lead to 2. The Kings would heavily outplay the Ducks in the third, but once again Gibson would hang on. Gibson would only give up one more goal, as the Ducks would win 4-3. The Kings would start the scoring in Game 6, as Jake Muzzin found the back of the net just over 8 minutes into the game. Trevor Lewis would score in the latter part of the second before Kyle Palmieri answered back for the Ducks. That was it for goals, as the Kings take the low-scoring affair to force a Game 7. Once again the Kings would play in a Game 7, and once again they would blow out the opposition. This time around the score came earlier, with Justin Williams, Jeff Carter and Mike Richards all scoring in the first period. Anze Kopitar and Gaborik would add to the lead in the second before the Ducks could respond. Both teams would swap goals in the third, as the Kings would go on to win 6-2. The Kings eliminate the Ducks in 7 games, and fight their way back to the Western Conference Final.

Three Thoughts on the Series
  1. Corey Perry nuts are getting a workout this playoffs. Perry also did this to Jeff Carter.
  2. Pretty good idea to have a billboard of a roasted duck around the Ducks home area.
  3. Boudreau tried playing Goaltender Roulette, and almost won too.

2014 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs Review: (A1) Boston Bruins vs. (A3) Montreal Canadiens

Series Summary

The Habs got the ball rolling in Game 1, as P.K. Subban snapped one from the point past Tuukka Rask to give the Habs the lead. Rene Bourque would score early in the second to extend the lead. Boston would tie the game early in the third. Francis Bouillon would score midway through the frame to regain the lead for the Habs. With 2 minutes to go in regulation, Johnny Boychuk would blast one home to tie the game and force overtime. The first overtime was the Carey Price show, as he made  a few highlight reel saves to keep the Habs in the game. Just like how the game started, the game would end the same way. Subban would score on the powerplay in the second overtime period to end the game and give the Habs the 1-0 series lead. Boston looked to right the wrong from Game 1, and would strike first in Game 2 with Dan Paille finding the back of the net midway through the first. Montreal would open and close the second period with a goal, taking a 2-1 lead heading into the third. Thomas Vanek would score his second powerplay goal of the game 6 minutes into the third period to extend the Habs lead. After that it was all Bruins. Dougie Hamilton would kick off the Bruins comeback midway through the third. Goals by Patrice Bergeron and Reilly Smith would follow as the Bruins would take Game 2 and tie the series. Game 3 started out pretty evenly, but the Habs would be the only ones on the scoreboard, leading 2-0 after the first. Dale Weise would extend the Habs lead before Bergeron gave Boston its first goal of the game late in the second. Jarome Iginla would score late in the third, but that was as close as the Bruins would get. The Habs take Game 3 and once again take the series lead. Game 4 was a goalie duel, as both Carey Price and Tuukka Rask would stop 30+ shots in regulation. Matt Fraser would eventually end the game in overtime, poking the puck into the Habs net. Carl Soderberg would open the scoring in Game 4, snapping one past Price midway though the first. Boston would capitalize on a Tomas Plekanec double-minor early in the second, scoring twice to extend their lead to 3 goals. Montreal would find the scoreboard later in the period thanks to a Brendan Gallagher powerplay goal. Loui Eriksson would get back that 30goal lead for Boston with a goal in the later half of the third. While the Habs would control play from their, only Subban was able to find the back of the net. Boston would take Game 5, giving them their first series lead and pushing Montreal to the brink of elimination. Needing a big game back in Montreal, the Habs would not disappoint. Price would stop all 26 Bruins shots, while the offense would score 4 times give the Habs the Game 6 win. Dale Weise would score early in Game 7 to give the Habs the lead. It would stay 1-0 until 10 minutes into the second, as Max Pacioretty would score to extend the Habs lead. Iginla would cut the lead in half later in the period with a powerplay goal. The Bruins would press in the third, but it was all for not. Daniel Briere would add a powerplay goal late in the third to ice the game, giving Montreal the win. The Habs eliminate the Bruins in 7 games.

Three Many Thoughts on the Series
  1. The only game I was able to see start-to-finish was Game 7, so I'll try to keep my thoughts in order (and I may miss a few things).
  2. CBC was cutting jobs before the series. Now, it's never good to see people lose their jobs, but I kind of hope one of the firings was the person who thought "let's make Bob Cole call the other series".
  3. Before the series, I'm sure I was with the majority thinking "Boston probably wins this series, but hopefully Montreal can win a game and not get swept".
  4. It's no surprise that a few idiots decided to go off after Subban's overtime goal in Game 1.
  5. IT W(don't do it)...IT WA(you're better than this)...IT WAS(last chance)...IT WAS 3-1!!! (calls therapist).
  6. Bouillon did have a bad game in Game 2, but did Therrien have to replace him with Murray?
  7. Speaking of Murray, the Habs went 1-2 with him in the lineup. This is 1 more win than I expect.
  8. One more Murray thing: if Bouillon was sat after Game 2, how come Murray got an extra game after getting outmuscled and blowing his assignment on the winning goal in Game 4?
  9. P.K. Subban and Dougie Hamilton star in Net Removers. Coming this fall.
  10. You never want to accuse someone of being as such, but...well...do you think Shawn Thornton is a defense-ist? (First Orpik, now Subban. Where does it end?)
  11. Joking aside, probably not the best idea to whine about a guy ducking a hit then squirting water at said guy in the middle of play.
  12. I might only ever say this once: Marchand got jobbed on his first penalty call in Game 7
  13. (That second penalty was totally deserved).
  14. It's pretty bad when my first thought going into the third period of Game 7 was "Don't be like the Leafs. Don't be like the Leafs. Don't be like the Leafs..."
  15. How to win the Quebec vote while losing the B.C. and Ontario ones in one tweet.
  16. This series probably took years off my life (and probably many other Habs fans).

Germany would start off against Kazakhstan. While the Germans would rack up the shots, they could only find the back of the next once in 65 minutes of play. This was different in the shootout, as Germany would score twice, and take the game 2-1. Against Latvia, Germany would give up the tying goal minutes after taking the lead. That ended in the third, as Thomas Oppenheimer's penalty shot goal would be the difference in the 3-2 win. That would be the last Germany's winning ways, as they began their downfall by getting shutout by Finland. Germany was able to respond to Switzerland's first period goal, but could not keep up with Switzerland's 2-goal second period, as they dropped the game 3-2. Things looked to have turned around against Belarus, as Germany would score the first two goals and end the opening frame up 2-1. It wasn't meant to be though, as they would give up the tying goal in the second before conceding 3 in the third to lose the game 5-2. Poor Kazakhstan. They would start score first against Germany, but would finish the first period tied 1-1. The Kazakhs withstood the Germany blitzkrieg for the rest of the game, holding out until the shootout. Unfortunately, Kazakhstan could not capitalize, and would lose the shootout (and the game) 2-1. Against Belarus, Kazakhstan would score early in the first. That was all for Kazakhstan, as Belarus would put up 2 goals in the second and third periods to hand Kazakhstan another loss. Kazakhstan would give up the first goal to Latvia, but would end the first up 2-1. A goal-filled second saw both teams end the period tied 4-4. In the end, Kazakhstan would give up an early third period goal, which would end up being the difference maker. Kazakhstan didn't have much of a chance against Russia, as they suffered through a 7-2 blowout. Kazakhstan looked to pull off an upset against the US. While they swapped powerplay goals in the first, Kazakhstan would fall behind a goal after the second. Roman Starchenko would score midway though the third to tie the game. The upset was not meant to be though, as Kazakhstan would give up the winning goal just over a minute into overtime. Kazakhstan would suffer next game, getting beat 6-2 by Switzerland. Kazakhstan would end the tournament against Finland. While both teams ended the first period tied 2-2, Kazakhstan would concede another 2 goals in the second, which put the game out of reach. Kazakhstan would score a too-little-too-late goal in the third, losing the game by the respective score of 4-3. Kazakhstan would end up not winning a game and finishing last in the group. They are relegated to Division I for next year.

Round Robin Summary

It started off scary for Canada, as they were pushed to a shootout by France (which they would ultimately lose). It seemed like much of the same against Slovakia, as Canada would tie the game up after giving up the first goal. This time though, Canada would find the back of the net more often in the third, winning the first game of their winning streak. For the third straight game, Canada would give up the opening goal before tying it soon after. With the help of a couple powerplay goals in the second, they were able to stay ahead of the comeback the Czech attempted (and it helps having a goalie who considers facing 18 shots in a period as "normal"). A Cody Hodgson hat trick would highlight Canada's 6-1 win over Denmark. It was much of the same against Italy (expect Canada did most of their scoring in the second and Italy's lone goal was in the third) as Canada once again would win 6-1. Canada would fall behind against Sweden, as they gave up the opening goal midway though the first and another goal early in the second. It didn't take long for Canada to make up those 2 goals, as they tied the game within 6 minutes. It took until overtime, when Ryan Ellis would put one past Anders Nilsson to give Canada the 3-2 win. Canada ended the Round Robin with another scare (this time against Norway). Canada would have to tie the game twice before finally taking the lead in the third and keeping it. Canada would finish the round robin first in the group and advance to the quarter finals.

Round Robin Summary

Sweden would start off round robin play with a 3-0 win over Denmark. Sweden would fall behind the Czech Republic early in the first and would finish the period down by one. While they gave up another goal in the second, Sweden's powerplay would help them eventually tie the game. This game needed a shootout, where Sweden would outscore the Czechs to earn the win. While Sweden would dominate Norway, they would end up tied 1-1 after 2 periods. Sweden would score in the third, and it would stand as the winning goal. Against France, it would take until the second period, but Sweden would finally find the back of the net. Their 2-goal second period was enough for them to hold on and win the game 2-1. Sweden's powerplay helped against Slovakia, as they would score twice in the first. While Slovakia would score in the second to cut the lead to 1, Sweden would get their 2-goal lead back in the third. The Swedes would win that game 3-1. Sweden would take the lead against Canada in the first and would add to it early in the second. That lead would evaporate quickly, as both teams would stay at 2 goals a piece for the rest of regulation. Sweden would lose the game minutes into overtime. Sweden would finish the round robin against Italy, with their powerplay contributing 4 goals in their 5-1 win. Sweden would end up second in the group, and advance to the quarter finals.

While Sweden tied it up later on, the Czechs would escape the first with a 1-goal lead. The Czechs would add to the lead halfway through the second, then got in penalty trouble. The Czechs gave up a powerplay goal in the second and third, as the Swedes would tie the game. In the end, the Czech Republic would lose in the shootout. The Czech Republic would score first against Canada, but would finish the first period tied. They would surrender the go-ahead goal early in the second before Jan Kovar would be ejected for slashing. Canada would score twice on that powerplay. In the third, the Czechs did manage to score twice, but could not get any closer, as they would lose 4-3. The Czech Republic would rebound against Italy, as they would shut them out while scoring the second and third periods. Against Denmark, the Czechs would score twice early on. Denmark would score soon after to cut the lead to one. The Czech Republic would add to their lead in the third, then things turned against them. The Czechs would give up 2 goals late in the third, and would be forced to a shootout (where they would lose). Once again, the Czechs would rebound from a loss with a shutout. This time they beat Norway 1-0. Against France, the Czechs fell behind 3-0 in the first before finally getting a goal at the end of the period. The Czechs would come back in the second with 3 goals of their own. The Czechs would give up a goal in the third, but would score in overtime to have the last laugh. The Czech Republic finish in third place, earning a spot in the quarter finals.

They didn't have such luck against Italy, as France would get scored on in the last minute to suffer a 2-1 loss. France would fall behind against Slovakia, as they would head into the third down 3-1. Thanks to 2 consecutive Slovak penalties, France's powerplay would tie the game. Damien Fleury would score the winner with 4 minutes left, as France would add another one to the win column. Against Sweden, France could not pull off another upset, as they would lose 2-1. In a goal-filled game against Norway, France would go form being down 2-0 early in the second to scoring 3 goals within a minute late in the period. Norway would eventually tie the game in the third, but France would end up the victors in the shootout. France would go goal-for-goal against Denmark for the first 2 periods before blowing the game out in the third, eventually winning 6-2. Against the Czech Republic, France would score 3 times in the first to open the scoring. They could not hold on, and by the end of the second France was down a goal. The Slovaks would hold on until late in the third, when the Czechs would tie the game. Slovakia would lose the game minutes into overtime. Slovakia looked to have turned it around against France, leading 3-1 after the second. But once again Slovakia would implode in the third, as they gave up 4 goals to France. Slovakia lost the game 5-3. Against Norway, Slovakia would go goal-for-goal in the first. Slovakia would pull away, scoring once in the second and twice in the third to give them the 5-2 win. Norway would start the tournament off well, as Lars Haugen would stop 15 shots in their 3-0 win against Italy. Special teams were paramount in their game against Denmark. In the end, Norway's would outdo Denmark's, as the Norwegians would win 5-4. Despite struggling against Sweden early on, Norway would open the scoring in the second. In the end they could not hold on, as Sweden would score in the second and third to give Norway their first loss. Against Slovakia, Norway would need to tie the game twice in the first. This was the end of Norway's scoring, as they would give up 3 more over the next 2 periods to suffer their second straight loss. Norway looked to have ended their losing ways against France, scoring a goal in both the first and second periods. That lead would evaporate quickly, as France scored 3 times in a minute to take the lead. Norway would tie the game in the third (twice!) to force overtime. This game went to a shootout, where Norway would suffer another loss. Norway would give up an early goal to the Czech Republic, and that was it. The best chance Norway had to tie the game was on a penalty shot, but Ken-Andre Olimb failed to convert. In their last game, Norway would put a bit of a scare into Canada, as they would take the lead twice in the game. In the end, Norway would give up a powerplay goal in the third to finish with another loss. Norway ends up sixth in the group.

Round Robin Summary

Denmark had a rough start to the tournament, getting shut out by Sweden 3-0. While they scored 2 early goals against Norway, Denmark would see that go away during the course of the game. Denmark would score once more in the third to pull within one, but that was as close as they got to tying that game. Denmark would finally find the win column against Italy, as a 2-goal second period gave them the lead in their 4-1. Against Canada, it was Denmark who would only find the back of the net once, as they would be blown out 6-1. Penalty trouble would cost Denmark early against the Czech Republic, as they would go down 2-0 early. Denmark would score minutes later to cut the lead to one. While the Czechs added one more early in the third, Denmark was resilient, and would eventually tie the game late in the third. Denmark would eventually win in the shootout. Denmark would end their tournament with 2 losses, getting blown out by France and losing a close game to Slovakia. Round Robin Summary

Italy's tournament started out poorly, as they were shut out by Norway. Against France, Italy was able to response when France opened the score. With just under a minute left, Markus Grander would score to give the Italians the win. Against Denmark, Italy would leave the first period tied. That was all the Italians could do though, as they would give up 3 more during the game to suffer another loss. Italy couldn't do much against the Czech Republic, as they suffered getting shut out for the second time this tournament. While Italy managed to keep the shots even between them and Canada for 2 periods, the score during that time wasn't close. Italy would eventually score against Canada in the third, but it was already over, as Italy lost 6-1. The Italians would get peppered with shots by Slovakia and couldn't keep up, suffering a 4-1 loss in the end. Italy would pay for taking penalties against Sweden, as they would lose their last game of the tournament 5-1. Italy finishes last in Group A, and will be relegated to Division I for next year.
