Team Recap
Bulgaria: While Bulgaria may have not been the best starters, but they could finish. They (specifically, Alexei Yotov) started against Luxembourg with 3 early goals before Luxembourg clawed their way back. After a mostly back-and-forth second, Bulgaria recaptured the lead late in the period and added a few more in the third, winning the game by a final score of 8-5. Against UAE, Bulgaria once again found itself in a battle during the first period. The Bulgarians did dominate afterwards, and would win the game 11-5. It was a bit of a different story against Georgia, as Bulgaria put up a 10-spot in the first to cruse to a 19-1 victory. In their next game, Bulgaria and Hong Kong swapped early goals in the first. Bulgaria's powerplay come through later in the game, leading them to a 6-1 win. In the promotion game against North Korea, Bulgaria was behind after one, but they pulled through and took the lead late in the second. They added a few more goals, as Bulgaria would win 4-1. With the win, Bulgaria would finish the tournament undefeated and get promoted back to Division II.
North Korea: North Korea started off with a bang, as they just dominated Georgia, beating them 22-1 (shots for the game: 92-4). North Korea was slowed down a bit by Luxembourg, but they still had no problem, winning 7-3 against the host. North Korea would score 12 against both Hong Kong and UAE in 12-2 and 12-1 wins (respectively). In their final game against Bulgaria, North Korea scored early in the first period, but could not get anything past Bulgarian goalie Konstantin Mihaylov (who is 49 years old). North Korea would give up goals late in the second and throughout the third in the 4-1 loss. While dominate for basically all their games, North Korea would wind up in second place, and will have to play in Division III next year.
Luxembourg: The host started the tournament in a tight match with Bulgaria. After given up 3 early, Luxembourg battled back and eventually too the lead in the second. It wasn't to be though, as the host couldn't keep up with Bulgaria in the end, losing 8-5. Against North Korea, Luxembourg gave up too much and couldn't come back, losing 7-3. Luxembourg would win the rest of the way, starting with an 8-1 against UAE. The host would shut out both Georgia (19-0) and Hong Kong (8-0) to end the tournament. Luxembourg ends this tournament in third place.
Hong Kong: It's been a while since Hong Kong was in a World Championship tournament, but they didn't look too out of place. They began their comeback in this competition holding off UAE in a 2-1 win that went to a shootout. Hong Kong got their lone regulation win by shutting out Georgia 12-0. Against North Korea, Hong Kong kept them close in the first period, but could not keep up of the other two periods. Hong Kong would fall to their east Asian brethren 12-2. It was much of the same against Bulgaria, as Hong Kong would keep the game tied in the first, but would lose the game 6-1. Hong Kong would finish the tournament getting shut out by Luxembourg 8-0. Hong Kong would end their first tournament since 1987 in fourth place.
United Arab Emirates: UAE started off outshooting Hong Kong, but the game remained tied before they lost 2-1 in a shootout. UAE would keep Bulgaria close in the first, but couldn't keep up the rest of the way, losing 11-5. UAE didn't have much of a chance against Luxembourg and North Korea, losing those games 8-1 and 12-1 (respectively). UAE won their last game against Georgia, beating them 6-1. UAE moved up a spot from last year, finishing fifth in this tournament.
Georgia: There isn't much to say about Georgia. They gave up double digits in goals in 4 of their 5 games. Their lone bright spot may have been their game against UAE, in which they held UAE to 6 goals on 50 shots. Georgia finish last in the group, and will hope to cut down on the number of goals they give up next year.
