Showing Some International Love: 2014 World Championship Division I Group A Preview

South Korea host this tournament, and will hope to have a few pleasant surprises for the home crowd. Austria, Hungary and Slovenia are the normal heavy-hitters of the group and all three will no doubt be in a fight for the two promotion spots. Japan and the newly-promoted Ukraine round out this group.

Note: most information from the (fancy) IIHF website.

Predictions

1 (Promotion) - Slovenia
2 (Promotion) - Austria
3 - Hungary
4 - Ukraine
5 - South Korea
6 (Relegation) - Japan

Slovenia is a pretty good team (relative to the group), so it shouldn't be a problem for them to earn a promotion spot. Austria is weaker than usual, but I just can't see them no getting promoted. Hungary will fight for a promotion spot - and might even get one - but I have them finishing third. Ukraine might be a darkhorse despite missing a few key players. South Korea host this tournament (and the next winter Olympics), so I won't be surprise if they stay up this year and start climbing the rankings next year. Japan is the odd team out at sixth, getting relegated to Group B.
