Team Recap
Estonia: They basically had this wrapped up after day 3. They started off with a 4-1 win against Iceland despite putting up a measly 38 shots (compared to what they did the rest of the way). Against Australia, Estonia put the game out of reach before the end of the first, as they cruised to a 5-1 victory. It got a bit tougher against Serbia, as Estonia gave up the first goal (the only time they trailed). Estonia got the goal back moments later, and eventually took the lead in the second. Estonia would go on to beat Serbia 5-2. Estonia didn't have any trouble defeating Israel, as they put up double-digit goals in the 16-3 win (surprisingly, no hat tricks). Estonia finished their tournament with a 6-1 win over Belgium. Estonia had no problem in finishing first in this tournament and moving up to Division I for next year.
Iceland: While Iceland didn't have much of a chance to finish first, it still took them until the last day to cement their second place finish. They began with their only loss, a one-sided 4-1 loss to Estonia. Iceland would go goal-for-goal against Belgium before falling behind in the second. They would come back in the third, as 4 unanswered goals lifted Iceland over Belgium 6-3. Iceland's late-game scoring would come in handy against Australia, as once again Iceland fell behind in the second before tying the game in the third. Johann Leifsson would score the overtime goal to win the game for Iceland 3-2. Against Serbia, it was Iceland who would give up the lead in the third. After scoring the first 3 goals, Iceland gave up the last 3 goals (2 of which were in the third). Emil Alengard scored the only shootout goal, giving Iceland the 4-3 win over Serbia. In their last game, Iceland once again went to a shootout (this time against Israel). Once again, Alengard got the only shootout goal in Iceland's 4-3 win over Israel. Iceland ended the tournament in a clear-cut second place.
Serbia: The host gave the home crowd a few things to cheer about. They did start the tournament off poorly though, losing to Belgium 8-3. Serbia did bounce back against Israel, beating them 10-6. Against Estonia, Serbia did put up a bit of a fight, but would ultimately lose the game 5-2. Serbia would fall behind but 3 goals against Iceland, but would claw their way back to tie the game and force a shootout. Unfortunately for Serbia, they failed to convert in the shootout, and would lose the game 4-3. In the last game of the tournament, Serbia went toe-to-toe with Australia. It was a scoreless affair until almost two minutes left, when Nemanja Vucurevic's would life Serbia to a 1-0 win. Despite winning the second most regulation games, Serbia would finish the tournament in third place.
Australia: Australia would be involved in a crazy third period against Israel. After building a 2-0 lead in the first two periods, the Aussies gave up the lead in the third. They did convert on a penalty shot late in the period, but then gave up another tying goal with seconds to go. Australia would lose in overtime 4-3. Against Estonia, Australia would tie them midway through the first, but couldn't hold on to end the period that way. They would lose to Estonia 5-1. The Aussies would give up an early goal against Iceland, score 2 in the second, and give up a late goal in the third. Australia would lose a minute into overtime, as they lost the game 3-2. Australia would finally get into the win column against Belgium, as they beat them 7-1. The Aussies would finish the tournament getting shut out by Serbia 1-0. Australia would finish in fourth place, having the tiebreaker over Belgium.
Belgium: Belgium began the tournament well, putting up 3 goals against Serbia early in their 8-3 win. The Belgians would be evenly matched against Iceland, as they went goal-for-goal in the first before a powerplay goal in the second gave Belgian the lead. They could not hang on though, as Belgian gave up 4 goals in the third to suffer a 6-3 loss. It was a bit different against Israel, as Belgian would be down 3-1 after the first but would tie it up in the second. The game would remain tied until just pass a minute into overtime, with Dennis Swinnen scoring to life Belgian to the 4-3 win. Belgian would run into a wall against Australia, as they lost 7-1 despite outshooting the Aussies 36-23. The Belgian would end their tournament with a 6-1 loss against Estonia. Belgium would finish in fifth due to losing the tiebreaker for fourth.
Israel: The tournament started off in dramatic fashion for Israel. They gave up 2 goals in the opening two periods to Australia before clawing back in the third. After giving up a penalty shot, Alon Eizenman scored with six seconds left to tie the game. Oren Eizenman would score the winning goal in overtime, lifting Israel to the 4-3 win. Against Serbia, Israel fell behind during the first two periods, giving up 6 unanswered before once again crawling back. Israel go to within one, but that was as close as they would get, as they would lost to Serbia 10-6. Next game, Israel was able to finish the first period up 3-1 before Belgium would tie it up in the second. The game went to overtime, where Israel would lose 4-3. Israel did not have a chance against Estonia, as they got blown out 16-3. Israel needed a regulation win against Iceland to stay alive, and they almost had it. Israel got the go-ahead goal early in the second and it stayed that way until just under 4 minutes left in the third when Iceland tied it back up. Israel would go on to lose in the shootout 4-3. Israel would finish in sixth place, and is relegated to Group B.
