Team Recap
North Korea: The North Koreans started the tournament with a 13-0 blowout of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Their game against Georgia was much closer, as North Korea fell behind early before managing to end the first period up 3-2. North Korea took over from there, as they ended up winning the game 12-4. A 5-goal first period against UAE was more than enough for the North Koreans, as they earned another shutout, winning the game 7-0. North Korea was in tough against Luxembourg. Chun Rim Hong scored less than a minute into the game, but Luxembourg struck back quickly to tie the game. It remain 1-1 until late in the second, when Song Jin Pak's powerplay goal gave North Korea the lead. They extended their lead in the third, and managed to keep it. North Korea won the game 5-2. North Korea did not have much trouble with Hong Kong, as they notched another shutout, winning the game 9-0. The North Koreans faced Turkey in the promotion-deciding game. North Korea gave up the first goal, but managed to score twice before the first period ended to take a 2-1 lead. It wasn't until the third period when another goal was scored, but this time it was against the North Koreans. The end of the third was intense. North Korea would take a penalty, but managed to score shorthanded. Turkey did not capitalize on the powerplay, but did tie the game soon after the penalty expired. The game headed to overtime, and was decided late in the period. Turkey took a tripping penalty with less than a minute left in overtime. North Korea capitalized, as Chun Rim Hong scored on the powerplay to lift North Korea to the win. With that win, North Korea finished first in the tournament and is promoted to Division II.
Turkey: The host were the last team to start the tournament, but once they did they were dominate. Led by a 4-goal performance by Alec Kocoglu, Turkey would start their tournament by shutting out Bosnia and Herzegovina 11-0. Against Georgia, it was another Turkey who managed a 4-goal game. Serdar Semiz would score a hat trick in the second period before scoring late in the game, as Turkey beat Georgia 13-1. There was not much of a contest between Turkey and UAE. The host skated by UAE, winning 15-0 while putting up 64 shots on goal. Turkey continued to roll against Hong Kong. The Turks had 7 different goalscorers in their 10-1 win over Hong Kong. Turkey would finally face adversity, courteous of Luxemburg. Turkey would fall behind 2-0 after the first period. They would let up another goal before potting a couple goals of their own. Both teams swapped goals in the later half of the second, as Turkey was still behind (4-3) when the period ended. Turkey would get a penalty early in the third, but managed to score while shorthanded to tie the game. Once again, both teams swapped goals later in the period. Semiz ended up playing hero for the Turks, as a pair of goals with under 2 minutes left lifted Turkey to the 7-5 win. Turkey's last game was against North Korea. The host would get an early marker, but it was slowly erased, as Turkey ended the first period behind 2-1. Turkey did find the equalizer early in the third, as Semiz scored 48 seconds into the period. A late penalty by North Korea looked to favour Turkey, but it ended up hurting them, as North Korea scored shorthanded. It did not take long after their powerplay ended for Turkey to once again tie the game. Overtime was needed to solve the game. Turkey ended up being the unfortunate ones. Yusuf Halil was called for a tripping penalty, and it did not take long for the North Koreans to capitalize. The host suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 overtime loss against North Korea. Turkey ended up second in the tournament, and will be playing in Division III for another year.
Luxembourg: Luxembourg started their tournament against Georgia. It wasn't an ideal start for Luxembourg. While they did outshoot Georgia 19-4 in the first, the score was only 3-2 for Luxembourg at the end of the period. They did manage to extend their lead in the second, ended the period up 6-3. The third period was more reflective of Luxembourg's dominance during the game, as they found the back of the net 9 times. Luxembourg won the game 15-3 while outshooting Georgia 66-9. Their game against UAE started much of the same way, as Luxembourg ended the first up 2-1 despite massively outshooting their opponent. They kept adding to their lead in the last two periods, eventually winning the game by a score of 7-2. Luxembourg continued to roll against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Marcus Eriksson scored a pair of goals, as Luxembourg won 5-0. The next couple of games provided to be tough for Luxembourg. Against North Korea, Luxembourg went down early before tying the game less than a minute later. A Luxembourg penalty late in the second lead to a North Korean goal to break the tie. Both teams swapped goals in the third, but Luxembourg could not mount a comeback, as they suffer their first loss by a score of 5-2. Luxembourg looked to have a better time against Turkey, as they ended the first period up 2-0. The lead would be reduced in the second, but Luxembourg maintained it, as they ended the second period up 4-3. Luxembourg probably wishes the game was only 40 minutes long, as the their period was not kind to them. Turkey tied the game twice, then managed to score a pair of late goals to take the lead and the game. The 7-5 loss was Luxembourg's second loss of the tournament. Luxembourg's last game was against Hong Kong, and was closer to their earlier games in the tournament. Luxembourg outshot Hong Kong 13-5 in the first, but only held a 2-1 lead. A pair of goals by Robert Beran in the second extended that lead to 4-1. Both teams had a goal a piece in the third. Luxembourg won their last game of the tournament 5-2. Luxembourg once again finished third at the Division III level, adding another bronze to its cabinet.
Hong Kong: Hong Kong started off against UAE. A slow start saw Georgia up a goal after the first period. UAE scored twice in the second, but Hong Kong answered with 2 of their own before the period ended. Hong Kong finally exploded in the third, as they scored 5 unanswered en route to the 8-3 win. Hong Kong had an easier time scoring against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Alvin Cheuk Him Sham, Chung Pan Justin Cheng, and Heiu Yu To all scored a pair of goals, as Hong Kong shut out Bosnia and Herzegovina 8-0. Against Georgia, Hong Kong's scoring was pretty consistent. Hong Kong scored 3 times in the first and 4 times in both the second and third en route to a 11-3 win. The winning streak would soon turn into a losing steak for Hong Kong, as they suffered 9-goal losses against Turkey (10-1) and North Korea (9-0). Hong Kong finished their tournament facing Luxembourg. They were outshot in the first, but managed to keep the score close, ending the period down 2-1 to Luxembourg. That was as close as Hong Kong would get all game, as Luxembourg continued to control the game and the lead. Hong Kong ended up losing 5-2. Hong Kong ended the tournament in fourth place, an improvement over last year's fifth place finish.
Georgia: The first 2/3 of Georgia's tournament was not a memorable one. Georgia's first two games were similar. They would manage to keep the score close in the first before seeing their opponent pull away as the game went on, eventually giving up double digit goals. Those two games were against Luxembourg (loss 15-3) and North Korea (loss 12-4). Georgia's game against Turkey was amazing for a few reasons. During the 13-1 loss to the host, Georgian goalie Andrei Ilienko managed to stop 77 of 90 shots from the Turks. It didn't help Georgia at all that one of their top players (Vitali Dumbadze) was penalized for kneeing midway through the first and was ejected. The lone goalscorer for Georgia was their other top player, Dimitri Smetanin. Georgia fared better against Hong Kong, but still loss by a large margin (11-3). Georgia would face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the battle to see who would get their first Division III win. Georgia once again were outplayed, but managed to keep the score close, as both teams were tied 1-1 after the first. Ilienko was up to the task, as he kept Georgia in the game heading into the third. Dumbadze would score just shy of 2 minutes into the third period to give Georgia the lead. A pair of insurance goals by Revaz Tsomaia later in the period were enough to help Georgia win 4-1. Georgia looked to continue their momentum against UAE, and appeared to do so. A pair of goals by Dumbadze gave Georgia a 2-1 lead after the first period. UAE would manage to tie it up in the second before scoring twice midway through the third to take the lead. Georgia would come back though, as a shorthanded goal by Smetanin and a late goal by Dumbadze helped Georgia tie the game and force overtime. The game eventually needed a shootout, were Dumbadze once again played hero. Georgia won their last game by a score of 5-4. Georgia ended the tournament in fifth place, collecting their first 2 Division III wins in the process.
United Arab Emirates: UAE played Hong Kong in their first game. UAE looked good in the first, as they outshot Hong Kong but finished the period down 1-0. Their offense would find the net early in the second, scoring twice. Their lead did not last too long, as Hong Kong tied it up 2 minutes later and ended the period up by 1. The third period was not kind to UAE, as they were scored on 5 times. While they managed to find the net once more, UAE would suffer it's first loss of the tournament by a score of 8-3. Against Luxmebourg, UAE found themselves being outplayed, yet they managed to finish the first only down 2-1. Khaled Al Suwaidi did his best to keep UAE in the game, but in the end Luxembourg's attack was too much for the keeper. UAE lost their second game by a score of 7-2. The next couple of games weren't great for UAE, as they were shut out by North Korea (7-0) and Turkey (15-0). Against Bosnia and Herzegovina, UAE looked to turn things around. They looked to have done so in the first period, scoring twice on the powerplay to go up 2-0. Bosnia and Herzegovina scored 2 goals of their own in the second to tie the game. It took until late in the third period, but UAE managed to break the deadlock. Omar Al Shamisi scored his second of the game to put the Middle Eastern country in the lead. UAE scored twice more, winning the game 5-2. UAE's last game of the tournament was against Georgia. UAE kept the game close, as both teams went into the third period tied 2-2. A pair of goals midway through the third by Faisal Al Blooshi gave UAE its first lead of the game. Unfortunately for UAE, their lead would slip away from them, as Georgia scored twice late in the period to force overtime. Both teams failed to solve the game in overtime, so a shootout was needed. Georgia ended it in the sixth round, as UAE ends their tournament with a 5-4 shootout loss. UAE finished the tournament in sixth place.
Bosnia and Herzegovina: Poor BIH, after a positive exhibition series against Turkey in February they struggled their way through this tournament. They started off with a pair of double-digit losses, getting shut out by North Korea (12-0) and Turkey (11-0). The losses started getting closer for BIH, as Hong Kong (8-0) and Luxembourg (5-0) beat the newcomers. There was hope against Georgia, as Damir Nikulin scored BIH's first goal of the tournament midway through the first, which also tied the game. That was all the newcomers could muster, as Georgia potted three in the final frame to hand BIH another loss. Bosnia and Herzegovina's last game was the battle of the countries with long names, as they faced United Arab Emirates. BIH fell behind two goals in the first, thanks to some penalty trouble. Haris Mrkva would get Bosnia and Herzegovina back in the game in the second, scoring twice to tie the game. The third period once again was not kind to BIH, as the newcomers gave up three goals en route to the 5-2 loss. Bosnia and Herzegovina finish the tournament in seventh place.
