2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs Review - (4) St. Louis Blues vs. (5) Los Angeles Kings

Series Summary

Probably the best series in the first round ended a little too prematurely. St. Louis started this series Quick-ly (see what I did there?) up 2-0. In Game 1, a powerplay goal by Alex Steen in the first gave St. Louis the lead. It wasn't until when 32 seconds were left in the third that Justin Williams tied it up for Los Angeles. In overtime, Jonathan Quick coughed up the puck behind the net to Steen, who had the easy game winner. Rolls reversed in Game 2, as Dustin Brown scored the opening goal for the Kings. Patrik Berglund tied it up for the Blues minutes into the third. Then Barret Jackman (of all players) let a wrist shot go from the blue line that beat Quick with 51 seconds left. The Blues had the series lead, but that was it. Quick rebounded in Game 3, shutting out the Blues in the 1-0 win. The Kings tied the series in Game 4, in a game where both goalies were played by Brian Elliot. And speaking of Elliot, it was his turns for bad goals. The Blues tied up Game 5 late to force overtime. The Kings broke out into a 3-on-2, where Slava Voynov beat Elliot with a soft five-hole shot. Game 6 was, sadly, the end of the series. A Dustin Penner slapshot that was deflected beat Elliot milliseconds before the end of the second period. St. Louis tried to push for the tie in the third, but Los Angeles' defense did a good job of shutting them down. In the end, the Los Angeles Kings beat the St. Louis Blues in 6, and will face one of their interstate rivals.

Three Thoughts On The Series
  • Motto of the series: HITS HITS HITS!
  • Every game ended with a one-goal difference. Speaks to how tight this series was.
  • Stupid Kings had to deprive the hockey world of a seventh game in this series.
Picture Of The Series

Didn't know what to put here, so bravo to both coaches for their physical styles keeping this series entertaining (and Sutter keeping it entertaining off-ice too).

Play Of The Series

Quick's overtime gaffe. All the time in the world to get rid of the puck and it still wasn't enough.
