Team Recaps
Hungary: Hungary was on fire during the tournament, scoring at least 5 goals in every game. They started the tournament down to Lithuania early on, but it was nothing a 5-goal third period couldn't cure. Against Romania, both team exchanged early goals in the first, then Hungary took over from there, winning the game 6-1. Hungary had another slow start against Estonia, only getting 1 goal in the first. They picked it up afterwards though, adding 7 more goals in the 8-2 routing. Their game against the Netherlands was the only game were Hungary managed to score multiple times in the opening frame. And just like every other game, the Hungarians turned it on afterwards, winning 7-2. Hungary finished the tournament blowing out Croatia 8-1. Hungary swept the tournament and finished in first. They will compete in Division I Group B next year.
Lithuania: Lithuania goes from near-relegation last year to almost being promoted this year. They started of leading Hungary 1-0 after two periods, but things turned in the third, as they gave up 5 goals in the third to lose 5-1. It took close to a period and a half, but Lithuania did bounce back against Estonia, winning 5-2. They continued their dominance against Croatia, putting up another 5-spot against their opponent. Against Romania, Lithuania got most of their goals out of the way in the first instead of throughout the game. The 4-goal outburst was more than enough, as Lithuania would take the game 5-1. Lithuania finished the tournament off against the Netherlands. It looked to go their way, but the Dutch had other plans, tying the game up in the last 30 seconds of regulation. Lithuania ended up scoring about 3 minutes into overtime. Lithuania took a big leap forward, finishing in second.
Netherlands: Just like Lithuania, the Netherlands took a step forward. The Netherlands started off the tournament well, beating Estonia 4-1 and Croatia 7-3. Against Romania, the Dutch scored in the first, then both teams turned it on in the third, as they combined for 6 goals. Most of them were by the Netherlands, as they win 5-2. Their winning streak would end against Hungary. While the Dutch did get the early lead, the Hungarians would prove to be too much. The Netherlands would end up losing 7-2. In their final game, the Netherlands staged a third period comeback against Lithuania, capping it with the tying goal with 26 seconds left. They ended up losing in overtime. The Netherlands end the tournament in third place.
Estonia: Estonia didn't start the tournament off well, losing to the Netherlands 4-1. They did start off well against Lithuania, taking a 2-0 lead after one. It wasn't meant to be for Estonia though, as they ended the game with another loss. It got worst for Estonia against Hungary, as they got blown out 8-2, and were more than doubled up in shot (Hungary 56, Estonia 27). Estonia finally got one in the win column, as they beat Croatia 3-1. They ended the tournament with another 3-1 win, this time against Romania. Estonia finish the tournament in fourth, staying in Group A for another year.
Romania: Romania took a step back this year. They started off the tournament with their only win (3-1 against Croatia). That was followed up by a 6-1 drubbing at the hands of Hungary. The Romanians looked to have a chance against the Netherlands, as they held the deficit to just 1 in the first two periods. Then the Dutch offense took over and the Romanians were unable to keep up, losing the game 6-2. Romania started off the same way as they ended their last, by giving up 4 goals in a period. They were unable to mount any kind of comeback, and would lose 5-1 to Lithuania. Despite outshooting Estonia in their last game, Romania were unable to get more than one goal in the 3-1 loss. Romania finish the tournament in fifth place.
Croatia: I don't want to talk about it, but I have to. Croatia started off the tournament with a 3-1 loss against Romania. Against the Netherlands, Croatia was able to hang on until the third period, when the Netherlands were able to add to their lead. Croatia ended the game on the wrong side of the 7-3 score line. Croatia got a quick goal against Lithuania, but ended the first period down one. Once again, Croatia did keep the game close until the third, falling 5-2 in the end. In what was probably the most even game they played, Croatia ended the first up one against Estonia. Slowly, Estonia chipped away and built a lead of their own. While Croatia gave a valiant effort, they were unable to add to their goal total, falling 3-1 in the end. In their last game, with their fate already sealed, Croatia went out and got blown out 8-1 by Hungary. Croatia goes winless and finishes sixth, marking the second consecutive year they have suffered relegation.
